Candidates' Conference
A Candidates' Conference should be attended as soon as possible after registration.  At the Conference, the programme of work and expected standards are agreed with the adviser.  Candidates' should discuss the options with their Captain prior to attening the conference. Candidates may attend any of the Conferences run by each of the battalions in the district.  Contact your adviser for dates.

Although you can start (with care) before attending a Candidates' Conference - you must attend one as soon as possible.  You cannot complete your Queen's Badge otherwise!

You must discuss with your Captain and Advisor (who's approval is required) any planned activity, and subsequent changes to your plans.  Your Advisor will retain a copy of your Action Plan as documented approval of activities.

Some guidelines for the Queen's Badge can be found below, but for specific queries please contact your adviser.  Remember that your Adviser is there to assist and give advice - but there is little he can do if you leave things too late!  If you have any problems / questions, ask for assistance right away.

Once you're under way, you may find the more detailed information (links on the Queen's Badge Menu) useful.

Initial Guidelines
  • If planning to undertake the Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award concurrently with the Queen's Badge, you must purchase the starter pack / record book and register for that award as soon as possible - prior to commencing any qualifying work.  These can be ordered at the Candidates' Conference upon payment of the appropriate fee (£11 for Bronze & Silver, £16.50 for Gold), or sourced directly from the Battalion Shop, or BB Supplies.
  • If planning to complete your Queen's Badge in 12 months, remember that your work should be complete and in your Advisor's hands in good time for the Completion Course (the closing date is normally 4-6 weeks before the course!).
  •  Contact your advisor NOW if you think this will cause you a problem.
  • Log sheets must be submitted for all work (additional sheets are available on the Forms page).
  • Company Leadership in the Juniors or Anchors should last a whole session.
  • Acting as a Squad Commander / Tent Commander etc. are all expected of Seniors.   Running the Tuck Shop or Camp Bank (however complex or time consuming) etc. does not in any way constitute Leadership. None of these or similar activities are appropriate in this section.  If in doubt - consult your adviser before starting.
  • An appropriate Leadership Training Course should be undertaken as soon as possible (preferably before starting or in the early weeks of Company Leadership) in order to provide benefit..
  • Company Leadership may be carried out in another Company (with benefits to both Companies).
  • Community Service should be people-based, outwith the Company & Church and should last at least 30hrs over 6 months.  Consult your adviser before starting any service to ensure it's suitability.
  • Note that you should undergo an appropriate briefing at your place of service, which should cover any health & safety considerations.
  • You and your Captain / Supervisor are required to complete risk assessments prior to the work commencing.
  • Please note that this activity is no longer covered under Brigade Insurance unless an Officer is present at all times - you should ensure that you are covered by the insurance policy in force at your place of service.
  • Expeditions are to the Duke of Edinburgh Silver standard, and require appropriate instruction and preparitory work (which should be logged).  A 'practice' expedition is mandatory and should also be logged.
  • The expedition requires assessment by a qualified assessor and a full log, endorsed by the assessor and including route cards should be submitted.  Candidates are reminded that the expedition must have an objective which should also be documented.   Blank route cards are available on the Forms page.
  • Skills / Interests should be followed for at least 6 months, and documented participation / improvement / progression is required.
  • Physical activities should last a minimum of 12 weeks.  Documentation is required.
  • Questions for Candidates are not trivial and should not be left to the last moment.  Lanarkshire Area have produced a comprehensive guide for Candidates which is reproduced here to help guide you..
