Information for Captains and Company Queen's Badge / DoE Supervisors

The rôle of the Company Captain or the Company Queen's Badge supervisor is very important in guiding the candidate towards gaining the premier award.

The appointment of a "Company Supervisor" has been introduced recognising that some Captains, not being active in Company or Senior sections have only minimum contact with Queen's Badge candidates.  It should be noted however, the Company Captain's Report (page 32 of the Record Book) must be signed by the Company Captain.

Early preparation and planning of "opportunities for potential Queen's Men" is necessary.   The supervisor should be fore-armed with details of the opportunities available to the candidate, and be aware of the individual's interests, so that a plan of action can be prepared when supervisor and candidate meet to set out the "Action Plan" prior to meeting with the Battalion Adviser.

If in doubt about any section of the award, seek advice from your Battalion Adviser.

Captains' Guide, January 2001

The above notes are from the introduction to the Guide to the Queen's Badge for Captains and Company Supervisors in Scotland, published by Carronvale in January 2001.  It is recommended that this guide is consulted each year - even if you have Candidates every session.

It is strongly recommended that larger Companies appoint a Supervisor to work with Queen's Badge Candidates and those working towards DoE Awards.  Experience has shown this to be very successful in Companies with a regular through-put of Queen's Men.  The Battalion Adviser is available to advise / assist Officers as well as Candidates, and will be happy to explain any aspect of the award, and it's implementation to new Captains /  Supervisors.

Mentors' Guide

In light of the important rôle played by Captains and Supervisors,  ELA Queen's Badge Committee have published a "Mentors' Guide to the Queen's Badge".  This contains the entire text of the 2001 Captain's Guide - with the addition of information / advice pertinent to the operation of the Queen's Badge in East Lowland Area.  Additional DoE information will be published in a similar format due course.

The Mentors' Guide was issued to all Captains in East Lowland Area in 2002.  Edinburgh Leith & District Battalion retained a stock of these guides, and additional copies are available from their office, or your adviser.  A version can also be downloaded here.

Printable Guide

Note that when viewed, the pages of this guide do not appear in the correct order.  This file has been set up to allow the guide to be printed in A5 booklet form.  Please print, double-sided onto A4 Paper, assemble and fold in half to produce booklet.

If your printer does not support double-sided printing, print all the odd pages first (these are not the odd pages of the guide, but the odd pages of the adobe file.  The pages should then be reassembled in the correct order, and re-inserted into your printer before printing the even pages.  (Practice this first so you know which way round to put the paper back in!  It is not uncommon to have the reverse upside-down!).

Integration of Queen's Badge & Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Queen's Badge and Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award have always been closely aligned, making it possible, with care for Candidates to gain both awards simultaneously.

In order to better facilitate this, and offer greater support to Boys working towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at all levels, East Lowland Area Queen's Badge Committee have increased the support offered Young Men working towards the Advanced Awards in the Boys' Brigade.

To achieve this, the committee has been expanded to include extra advisers.  In practice, all advisers will provide support for Queen's Badge and Duke of Edinburgh's Award.  The posts of DEA Organizer, and Expeditions Coordinator have also been created within the Committee.

During the coming months, procedures will be implemented to ensure that the advisers are notified of DEA Registrations in the same manner as the current Queen's Badge notification.  All Companies and Young People currently working within the DEA Scheme in the Area will be contacted to offer any additional support required.

A register of those holding Expedition qualifications within the area is being compiled, and it is hoped to implement a system of notification that will allow Boys requiring expedition training / experience / assessment for Stage III Adventure / DEA / Queen's Badge to be matched up with Companies offering this and/or teamed up with other individuals to make up a suitably sized group.
