Get the Credit: Orienteering

Grade I
Awarded to Boys who have regularly attended a course of instruction that concludes with an orienteering event.

  1. Be able to read a map by orientation, looking at the terrain and compass.
  2. Be able to follow a single line feature and thumb the map.
  3. Complete an orienteering event (1.0 - 1.5 km) - Grade Yellow.

Grade Yellow
Easy obvious route choice, all stations adjacent to paths ad map features - time allowed: 35 mins.

Grade II
Awarded to Boys who have regularly attended a course of instruction that concludes with an orienteering event.

  1. The material covered in Grade I.
  2. Be able to read link features and define checking features.
  3. Be able to read objects alongside line features and use distance judgement.
  4. Complete an orienteering event (2.0 - 4.0 km) - Grade Orange.

Grade Orange
To include some route choice, and basic use of compass - time allowed: 60 mins.

Grade III
Awarded to Boys who hold Grade II, gained in a previous session, and have regularly attended a course of instruction that concludes with an orienteering event.

  1. The material covered in Grades I & II.
  2. Be able to orienteer across terrain against catching features for short distances, and be able to aim off.
  3. Be able to make simple route choices, using attack points and cutting corners.
  4. Complete an orienteering event (3.0 - 4.0 km) - Grade Light Green.

Grade Light Green
To include legs of different length, corner cutting to save time, and aiming-off - time allowed: 80 mins.

Colour Coding
The gradings have been taken from the BOF colour coding leaflet.  A General Information Pack is useful to have when attempting this credit with Boys.  It is available to anyone - send an SAE to the address below.
