Carpet Bowling

What is it?
The aim is to get the wood as close to the jack as possible. This programme is designed to encourage young people to participate in Carpet Bowling, and to develop their understanding of all aspects of the sport.

Safety Message
Participants should be aware of any safety requirements for the game, and should develop an understanding of the care and safe use of all equipment.

Ideas/Aims
The following list contains points, which you might want to think about/undertake when doing this activity:
• Understand the basic rules, as published in the Scottish Carpet Bowling Association Handbook.
• Have knowledge of the various woods and how to choose them, and of the requirements for correct equipment.
• Be able to deliver bowl competently.
• Take part in friendly singles matches.
• Be able to place the woods consistently.
• Compete in a team singles match.
• Demonstrate drawing, guarding, chap-and-lie and striking.
• Compete in friendly doubles matches.
• Play in a major competition, showing skill in all basic plays.
• Understand how to complete score sheets, and tournament draws of varied kinds.

Review/Assessment
The assessor should ensure that the participant has a sound knowledge of the rules of the game, and that he/she has shown improvement over the required period of time.
