Diving

What is it?
It is the art of jumping from a springboard into a swimming pool, in a safe manner.

Safety Message
Participants should receive appropriate coaching and instruction before commencing this activity, so that they do not harm themselves when diving.

Ideas/Aims
• Develop a sound knowledge of the equipment used in diving, and how to check that it is safe to use.
• Know what to do before diving, i.e. look for other pool users.
• Compete in appropriate club competitions.
• Develop reasonable skills in diving.
• Try the various different diving positions:
(a) Straight - in which the body is not bent at the hips or knees
(b) Pike - in which the body is bent at the hips but not at the knees
(c) Tuck - in which the body is bunched up tightly with the hands on the lower legs
(d) Free - which in practice is a combination of at least two of the other positions
• Attain a national governing body award.

Review/Assessment
Participants should demonstrate to the assessor which positions they can dive in, and if they have entered competitions, they should discuss the results of those. Participants should discuss the safety requirements of the sport.
