Flat Green Bowls

What is it?
The aim is to get the wood as close to the jack as possible. This programme is designed to encourage young people to take an active part in the sport, and to develop their understanding of the sport.

Safety Message
Participants should be aware of all safety rules, and comply with them at all times. They should learn the safe use and storage of equipment.

Ideas/Aims
The following list contains ideas, which you might like to follow/undertake when taking part in this physical activity:
• Know the basic rules as published in the English or Scottish Bowling Association Yearbook. Obtain the EBA Guidance for New Bowlers.
• Know the requirements regarding correct dress, i.e. whites or greys, correct footwear, waterproofs.
• Know the types and sizes of bowls and how to choose the correct size and weight to suit the player.
• Learn how to place the mat correctly and demonstrate how to deliver a bowl for forehand and backhand.
• Play in friendly single games
• Know the rules regarding singles, pairs, triples and fours games, including ends required to be played for each game.
• Know and be able to demonstrate, according to the level of skill attained, shots which can be played in a game: the draw, resting out a bowl, trailing the jack, follow through shots, fire or drive, block or stopper, touching bowl on the green, touching bowl in the ditch, resting a bowl, resting a bowl adjacent to the jack.
• Play in club events.
• Learn the correct method of measuring and be able to use different types of measuring equipment: spring measure, string measure, callipers, feeler gauges and wedges.
• Understand how to complete score cards, how club match results are calculated and how to mark singles matches.
• Know the duties of each player in pairs, triples and fours.
• Play in different types of game.
• Learn the tactics of play by taking part in club games.
• Play in individual competitions.

Review/Assessment
Participants should show the assessor their understanding of the rules and scoring of the game, and should demonstrate how they have improved over the required time. If they have entered any competitions/matches, they should show the assessor which place they finished in.
