Hurling
What
is it?
Hurling is an ancient game, played with stick and ball, and is one of the
fastest field games in the world. Men play in teams of fifteen, and women
in teams of twelve. The ball may be struck with the hurling stick, kicked,
or struck with the open hand. Physical contact is allowed, shoulder to shoulder.
Safety
Message
Participants should receive adequate instruction in the safe use of equipment,
and should always wear appropriate clothing.
Ideas/Aims
Have a sound knowledge of the laws of hurling.
Attain a reasonable proficiency in the
basic skills of hurling, in order to participate and compete in a serious
game.
Be able to keep score of the game.
Show knowledge of the care and maintenance
of equipment.
Compete in appropriate club competitions.
Show skills and an improvement in your
standard of play.
Develop an appreciation of tactics and
positioning play.
Be selected and play in a team, which has
proper fixtures.
Review/Assessment
Participants should show the assessor that they are competent with the rules
of the game, and that they know how to keep score. The assessor should ask
the participant to demonstrate that they know the tactics of the game, and
that they can play competently.
