Rowing and Sculling

What is it?
This is where several people row a boat (skiff) from one point to another, in the shortest time possible.

Safety Message
Participants should be able to swim confidently, in case the boat capsizes. They should receive appropriate training in the safe use of equipment.

Ideas/Aims
To participate in this activity you should:
• Be able to swim at least 50 metres strongly, dressed in rowing kit.
• Be able to scull a dinghy single-handed, know how to come alongside and moor safely to a wharf or quay.
• Receive tub-pair instruction sufficiently to qualify to row in an Eight or Four.
• Be a regular member of a crew (Eight or Four) and take part in competitive rowing appropriate to your age and class.
• Scull competently in a clinker or fine sculling boat for a distance of at least a mile without easing.
• Know the principles of Rowing, the construction and care of rowing boats.
• Row regularly in Open Regattas.
• Scull in fine boats in open competitions.
• Aim for an award or standard as set by the Amateur Rowing Association.

Review/Assessment
Participants should discuss with the assessor the strengths of each of the people necessary to make the team and their roles within the boat. If they have entered any competitions, the results of these should be discussed.
