Rugby League

 

What is it?

 

It is a team game which is played with a rugby ball. Points are scored by teams, either by scoring tries, or kicking the ball over the goal posts.

Participants should be given appropriate coaching before commencing this activity, and should have the necessary clothing for the game.

 

Ideas/Aims

 

·      Understand the physical preparation necessary to play rugby

·      Learn to pass, receive, run with the ball and kick the ball

·      Learn how to tackle safely

·      Learn how to srummage

·      Understand the rules of Rugby Union or Rugby League

·      Develop the skills that are unique to each code e.g. rucking / mauling / lineout for union heel back for league

·      Learn about the scoring system for Rugby Union or Rugby League and the tactics of the games.

·      Learn about the different positions played on the pitch, and what each position means to the overall team.

·      Play the game to determine which position you are best suited to.

·      Play for a team regularly

Take part in team practises between games, to improve your skills.

 

Review/Assessment

 

The participant should show the assessor what they have learnt about the rules and tactics of the game. They should demonstrate which position they play in, and how they can play in different positions if required to do so. The assessor may be invited to a match, which is being played against a rival team, to watch the participant’s game.
