Surfing and Bodyboarding
What is it?
The sport of riding waves (both natural waves in the ocean and artificial waves), using equipment that does not require (and is not designed for) paddles, sails, a motor or other means of propulsion other than the riders arms or legs. Disciplines within the sport: surfing (standing up), bodyboarding (lying down or 'drop knee' surfing on soft and flexible boards).Safety Message
Surfing is a potentially dangerous activity.
Participants must be physically fit and be able to swim at least 50 metres in open water.
When surfing in the UK it is strongly recommended that all participants wear a suitable wetsuit.
All first time surfers should be instructed by a BSA Accredited Surf Coach.
All surfers should be aware of, and adhere to, the BSA's Code of Conduct for Surfers.Ideas/Aims
Surfing is not only an excellent and enjoyable way of keeping fit and forgetting the stress of modern day life, to millions of people worldwide surfing is a way of life.
The British Surfing Association's Surf Awards are structures to provide surfers of all abilities with the opportunity to demonstrate the development of their skills and for their progress to be assessed. The Surf Awards are structured in order to allow for each individual student's current surfing experience/ability level.
In addition to surfing you should also:
Know how to care for and to maintain your board and any other equipment.
Learn and demonstrate different boarding techniques.
Learn how to 'read the waves' and gain an understanding of how the weather can affect the surf.
Aim for an award or standard as set by a governing body listed below.Review/Assessment
The assessor should review the participant's progression over the required period, discussing skills gained, targets set, awards achieved and general knowledge of the sport.Governing Body/Organisation
