Yoga
What
is it?
It
is form of exercise which involves assuming postures that work different areas
of the body. The postures stretch and tone muscles whilst focusing on
breathing. These exercises can release tension and help you to relax.
Safety
Message
Participants
should always be taught by a qualified and insured instructor. Any equipment
used should be safe and appropriate to the activity undertaken. Some positions
yoga should be modified for those participants with high blood pressure or
certain medical condition.
Ideas/Aims
You
should try a variety of types of yoga (e.g. Hatha, Iyengar, Sivananda)
Develop
an understanding of at least 10 postures. Examples include:

The cat
á
The cowÕs head
á
The child and anchor
á
The sphinx
á
The half-locust (with arms forward)
á
The standing reverse stretch
Participants
should also be aware of the difference between inverted postures, forward
stretches and reverse stretches.
Review/Assessment
Participants
should be able to show proficiency in demonstrating a number of posture. They
should be able to explain how each posture is achieved and also the purpose of
the posture. Participants should also be able to explain the effects of
attending classes.
